  • Working principle:

    • Current transformers operate on the principle of electromagnetic induction, converting a high primary current to a lower secondary current for measurement.

    • They consist of a closed magnetic core and windings.

    • The primary winding has few turns and is connected in series with the current to be measured, while the secondary winding has more turns and is connected to measuring instruments and protection circuits.

  • Main functions:

    • Current transformers primarily provide secondary currents for protection and measurement, effectively isolating secondary electrical equipment from high-voltage devices, ensuring operator safety.

    • They also enable the standardization and miniaturization of measuring instruments and relays, allowing for long-distance measurement with smaller wires and cables.

    • In the event of a high-voltage circuit fault, current transformers protect measuring instrument current coils from damage caused by high currents.

  • Important considerations:

    • The secondary circuit of a current transformer must always be closed during operation.

    • The secondary circuit of a current transformer must never be left open.
